"Deja Vu All Over Again"
This body of work is a selection of images from family photos juxtaposed with current photographs from my collection. Each original image I captured gave me an impression of the past. I have reinterpreted them to create a new image; coming full circle from the past, the memory and the present. I originally photographed these palms because they reminded me of my childhood times with my family. Displacement, cultural preservation and identity always played a major role in my photographic images. I question my fragmented childhood memories, my cultural identity and how this has impacted my artistic work. When I began to photograph, I was attracted to environmental portraits. People's expressions, their body language and details of their environment revealed so much about the subject. As I shifted from portraits to landscapes, often of oceans, trees and open spaces, I explored negative space and questioned my attraction for simplicity. Eventually I recognized my need to fill this space- with memories. On Exhibit at BATW @ 20th April 2017.
